Ancestral Hall

This scarf is inspired by the shrine in my family’s ancestral hall, located in Sheung Shui, the village where my father and his siblings grew up.

Ancestral halls are sacred spaces where clans gather to honour their ancestors. Common in southern China, these halls serve as venues for important family ceremonies, including weddings, funerals, and birthdays.

Standing in that space, surrounded by the names of those who came before me, I felt a deep sense of connection: spiritual, surreal, and auspicious. It was a powerful reminder that I am part of a long lineage, and that many more will come after me.

However, I could not ignore the fact that only the male ancestors’ names were recorded. That absence struck me, and it became a driving force in my desire to create my own heirloom pieces, vessels of beauty and meaning that can be passed down through generations.

This scarf features two symbolic flowers: peonies and cherry blossoms. Together, they represent wealth, beauty, and feminine strength - qualities I hope to honour and preserve through my work.
